EWU's Jones to enter NFL draft

Eastern Washington star running back Taiwan Jones has hired an agent and will enter the NFL Draft. Judging from the follow-up to Eastern Washington's FCS national championship last week, the news is shocking. Check out the Taiwan Jones slide show here.

Day after Pepperdine

There's a good reason this post is a little later than normal. I couldn't see the computer screen too clearly (no comments from the peanut gallery). I visited the eye doc today so I'm living in a blurry, light-sensitive world right now. Onward, perhaps with…

WSU's loss at Cal, the morning after 17

COUGARS Washington State had its chances last night. More than one down the stretch and more than one in overtime. But a couple of missed layups, a couple rebounds it wasn't able to corral and Cal came away with an 88-81 overtime win. For more…

Big Three too much for Waves

Here's my game story from Gonzaga's 92-75 victory over Pepperdine on Thursday. Check back tomorrow for a day-after post and a liltte bit more on Saturday's opponent, Loyola Marymount, which is in overtime against Portland at the time of this post.

WSU trails 42-32 at half

COUGARS Give a veteran coach like Mike Montgomery time to prepare, which you have on Thursdays, and his team is going to be ready for your defensive wrinkles. The Bears seemed to be inviting the double-team on the post and looking for the weakside wing.…

WSU minutes away at Cal

COUGARS There must be something about Haas Pavilion. We just watched Washington State nail seven consecutive 3-pointers in warmups. Sort of like the show Klay Thompson put on last year during the first half. Read on for more pregame musings.

Arop starting; Bell not for Waves

Manny Arop is back in GU's starting lineup, along with regulars Harris, Sacre, Gray and Goodson. Pepperdine's Keion Bell, who torched Gonzaga for 37 points last year (34 in the second half) is not listed as a starter. He's been battling an ankle injury and…

Chiefs almost giddy for outdoor game

It's only fitting that Bobby Brett, owner of the Spokane Indians baseball team and Spokane Chiefs hockey team, threw out the first pitch at Avista Stadium on a warm winter Thursday afternoon. The big thing is that Darren Kramer, using his stick as a baseball…

Busy weekend for women's basketball

Full slate of games for women's basketball teams, though the Washington State schedule is Friday-Sunday. Gonzaga plays one of its tougher WCC foes, at Pepperdine (game on TV, CBS college sports, hopefully my kids can find that channel for me), with LMU on Saturday. Idaho…

Chiefs closing in on Portland

The Spokane Chiefs picked up a big win Wednesday night in Portland, pulling within two points of the league-leading Winterhawks. Now we're headed to practice at Avista Stadium for Saturday's outdoor game. The weather forecast is for temperatures in the 40 and rain. Hopefully we'll…

Waves' coach won't be at GU game

A couple of items before we shut it down for the night. Pepperdine coach Tom Asbury won't be on the sideline for Thursday's game against Gonzaga. He'll be with his first grandchild, who was born prematurely Sunday. Also, Pepperdine's Keion Bell, who scored 37 points…

Halftime: Vandals lead 30-28

Idaho's Jeff Ledbetter put on a clinic in the last few minutes of the half, scoring seven straight points and grabbing steals on three consecutive possessions to help the Vandals take a 30-28 lead over Nevada at halftime. The Vandals (9-6, 3-1) are seeking their…
