WSU hasn’t forgotten

COUGARS

Saturday mornings way back when were filled with cartoons, a bowl or six of Trix and putting together maniac plans for a day without school. Then we turned eight. Those were still the good old days. Nowadays, Saturday mornings are filled with reading the Internet, a half-bowl of bran flakes and wondering when we can fit in a nap. Read on.

• Washington State: Remember the New Year's Eve prior to this last one? So, where were you when Mike Littlewood's crew was huddling by the scorer's table in overtime? And where were you about 10 minutes later, after the Cougars shocking lost to Oregon to open the Pac-10 basketball season? I can assure you every member of that WSU team remembers where they were and how they felt. So tonight's game with the Ducks seems a little different. At least that's the thrust of our advance that appeared in today's paper. (As an aside, isn't it great that Eastern Washington was able to win a national football title last night? I mean, not only isn't it great for EWU, but isn't it cool to have a national title game in which the two schools played their way in instead of being anointed by some arbitrary system? It made the Eagles' win that much more special.) ... CougCenter has a capsule preview of tonight's game as does Ryan Collingwood at the Lewiston Tribune. ... Bob Clark has this Oregon advance in The Register-Guard. ... There are also some football links. We passed along the news yesterday center Zack Williams will get to play in the Shrine Game but we also want to draw your attention to this story about Marquess Wilson in his local newspaper.

• Around the Pac-10: Instead of delving into basketball news right away, we want to cover the football news from yesterday, because it might signal a sea change in the Pac-12 North. As you surely know by now, Jim Harbaugh is leaving Stanford for the 49ers. So who is next on The Farm? The players have their pick but it seems as if the Cardinal can get a pretty successful coach now, especially with Andrew Luck coming back. ... Staying in the Bay Area, this story on Cal's renovations was interesting. ... And then there is this from The Register-Guard leading up to Monday's, ahem, national title game. There are so many stories in the Oregonian and R-G, I just threw a dart and picked this one. ... Back to basketball, Cal gave Arizona everything it could handle on Thursday, now Harper Kamp and company will try to do the same to ASU. ... The Wildcats, meanwhile, should get another dose of the same medicine from Stanford. ... Oregon State hasn't had much luck with Washington lately, and the Huskies seem to getting deeper, with the emergence of a couple players not counted on earlier – and despite the loss of Abdul Gaddy. ... UCLA's Josh Smith has always been the size of two players.

• That's all for the morning. We'll be back tonight prior to the game. Until then ...
