Vandals rally from 20-point deficit, tip SJSU

For the Idaho Vandals, the first quarter was a nightmare. And that's putting it mildly. They trailed 17-0 after three turnovers and eventually fell behind 20-0 early in the second period. But UI's offense -- behind new starting QB Taylor Davis and senior tailback Kama Bailey -- came alive in the fourth quarter, helping the Vandals snap a six-game losing streak in a 32-29 victory at San Jose State.

Idaho is now 2-7 and 1-4 in the WAC after its first FBS win of the year. But for a long time Saturday, it looked like it was going to drop yet another game.

The Vandals got a 55-yard field goal from Trey Farquhar -- a career long -- at the end fo the first half to cut SJSU's lead to 22-10. Then the offense went quiet in the third quarter, all while the defense kept the Spartans in check.

Idaho finally received a big spark from receiver Mike Scott, a Bay Area native, who hauled in a 49-yard pass to set up a touchdown from Bailey with 9:57 left. Davis then found Michael LaGrone on third-and-long to put the Vandals on top with 3:59 remaning, and Idaho linebacker Korey Toomer ran in the two-point conversion to give UI a 25-22 lead.

After forcing a SJSU punt, Idaho put the game away with a 70-yard run from Bailey and subsequent TD from Ryan Bass. The Spartans scored a quick TD in the final minute, but failed to get the ball back on an ensuing onside kick.

Bailey, who had 108 rushing yards for the season coming into the game, finished with 163 on the ground with two TDs. Davis was 13 of 20 for 162 yards with one TD and one interception. He was named the starter by Akey on Thursday, presumably for the rest of the year.
