Colorado looms closer for WSU

COUGARS

It's another hump day in football season. Somewhere around noon we draw closer to Saturday's Colorado game than we are to the last Seahawk win. Before we get there, though, we have news, notes and links – and a mea culpa. Read on.

• Washington State: You know I'm not a big uniform guy. As far as I'm concerned, games would be just as good if the players wore white T-shirts with numbers drawn on with a Sharpie. But that's not how most college sports fans think. So, to cater to my audience (or is pander a better word?), I'll pass along this link. You can vote for which uniform combination the Cougars wear against Stanford at homecoming. And, no, there is nowhere to vote for a white T-shirt with a 10 written in black. ... Speaking of 10, that number brings you my mea culpa. In today's Pac-12 notebook, I originally had Keith Price's touchdowns and interceptions incorrect (I have fixed it on-line). Read the wrong line in the Pac-12 stats. My bad. ... Freelancer Howie Stalwick has his WSU notebook in the News Tribune today. ... The Denver Post has this Cougar story. ... ESPN.com's Ted Miller examines this week's game between the two teams picked for the cellars of their respective Pac-12 divisions. ... Though it's been a while since the Cougars last played, a look at how the defensive line and linebackers performed against San Diego State. ... And ESPN.com's Diamond Leung mentions a short section of last week's basketball story, pairs it with a quote from Bill Moos from six months ago and has this post.

• Around the Pac-12: Miller updates the conference's Heisman candidates. ... The Big 12 has seemingly survived extinction. Now it's trying to rise from the ashes. ... The league's quarterbacks are an efficient bunch. ... Bud Withers rates the coaches' job security. ... The Times' Percy Allen has a short basketball post with a link to the conference's preseason prospectus. ... Washington: There is pressure on Josh Shirley as he tries to help replace injured defensive end Hau’oli Jamora. ... Oregon State: As the Beavers practice in preparation for Arizona State, they know they need to shore up the pass defense. ... Oregon: Former coach Rich Brooks has earned a spot in the state sports Hall of Fame. ... California: Another team with a struggling pass defense uses its bye to make improvements. ... Stanford: The Cardinal has two concerns: Scoring in the red zone and handling UCLA's pistol offense. ... Colorado: If the Buffs want to be winners, they have to start acting like winners. Especially on special teams. ... Utah: The Utes have been awfully good after bye weeks lately. Which is good, considering they face their first Pac-12 home game this Saturday against Washington. ... USC: The Trojans' quarterback got in trouble and now the coach may have some explaining to do as well. ... UCLA: Another team with some woes in its pass defense. ... Arizona State: A brother/sister combo are helping the Sun Devils' football/volleyball programs. ... An offensive lineman hangs it up. ... Arizona: As the Wildcats try to rev up their running game, the tight end might be needed more.

• That's it for this morning. We'll be back after practice this afternoon. Until then ...
