EWU football camp, Day 2

I've just filed my story from Day 2 of camp, which is mostly a look at some of the incoming freshmen. Look for it online shortly and on your doorstep tomorrow morning. ... Thursday's two-hour session was definitely ramped up in tempo; throw in some high humidity and shoulder pads, and the sweat was pouring and the drinking water running ...

Lots of agility drills on both sides of the ball, and I shot some short videos of the running backs as well as the cornerbacks . ... I started paying attention to reps for the QBs, and found that Kyle Padron was getting about half, with returnees Anthony Vitto and Vernon Adams splitting the other half. You can read into that as much as you want, but remember that Padron wasn't here for spring ball and may need to extra reps. Speaking of competition, Baldwin personally supervised an impromptu kicking competition, the first of several, between Jimmy Pavel and Kevin Miller. While not stellar, neither was graduated K Mike Jarrett - until game time. "It's only Day One," Baldwin said after practice. ... Star linebacker Zach Johnson cut his practice short and returned with an icebag over the knee he injured last season, but said it was just a precaution ... Some early pleasant surprises: RB Demetrius Bronson, who missed spring with a major hamstring injury but looks very strong this week; DL Evan Day, who looks to be in the mix at end after having what strength coach Nate Brookreson called the best performance of any player. ... Weird moment of the day: When I pulled into the parking lot Thursday afternoon, the old scoreboard was sitting on a trailer, hitched to a truck with its motor running and two guys inside the cab. Two hours later, the truck, trailer and guys were gone, but the scoreboard was sitting in the middle of the parking lot. I will investigate further. I've been assured that the new video scoreboard will be up in time for the home opener against Montana on Sept. 29. ... The Eagles start early tomorrow, with practice at 9 a.m.
