Relax on this Saturday
COUGARS
FROM PULLMAN -- It doesn't feel like Saturday, but it is. Doesn't feel like there's a full slate of college football games today, either, but there are. Even rarer? We get to watch most of them. Read on for all the links you need in that regard.
...
Though the Cougars have the day off, we do have some WSU news for you, both in this follow story in today's newspaper, as well as a blog post after last night's late practice and a conversation with defensive coordinator Mike Breske. Jerry Brewer offers some perspective after WSU's disappointing loss. Howie Stalwick has this story in the Kitsap Sun. And an interesting quote from BYU's Brandon Ogletree in this AP story from the game. ... Also, some interesting comments here from Riley Nelson, indicating that BYU apparently took offense to Mike Leach's comment about his Air Raid offense maybe looking "more like BYU than BYU does." As Jay Drew points out in that story, Leach was pretty clearly referring to BYU of the 1980s and not the current version -- hardly an incendiary or inaccurate statement -- but it doesn't seem as if BYU players took it the way it was intended.
Around the Pac-12 ...
Friday: Stanford didn't look particularly sharp in holding off San Jose State, 20-17, in its season opener.
Six teams are in action today, all in non-conference play:
Nevada at California, noon (Pac-12 Network): The Bears are happy to be back in Memorial Stadium, where they've been a sure thing in home openers in the Jeff Tedford era. They'll have revenge on their minds.
Colorado State at Colorado (in Denver), 1 p.m. (FX): Plenty of new faces in this old rivalry.
Hawaii at USC, 4:30 p.m. (KAYU): The Trojans are huge favorites, for good reason. Matt Barkley is focused on football this semester.
Toledo at Arizona, 7:30 p.m. (ESPNU): Plenty of mystery surrounds Arizona as the Wildcats begin the Rich Ridriguez era (an interesting comment about Mike Leach in that column).
San Diego State at Washington, 7:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Network): The Huskies know what to expect from Keith Price, but not from their defense.
Arkansas State at Oregon, 7:30 p.m. (ESPN): An interesting matchup, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be close.
Oregon State was supposed to host Nicholls State today, but that game has been postponed due to Hurricane Isaac.
We'll be back tomorrow. Enjoy the games.
