Quarterback to leave Washington State football team

UPDATE (8:11 p.m.) -- Apodaca confirmed that he has left the program, more from the quarterback after the jump.

Independent sources have told the Spokesman-Review that quarterback Austin Apodaca is no longer a member of the Washington State football program. No reason for Apodaca's departure was given.

A spokesperson for WSU said that the team does not comment on internal matters.

Apodaca, a redshirt freshman this past season, completed 21 of 42 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns as Connor Halliday's primary backup. He originally was recruited by former WSU head coach Paul Wulff and but became the first quarterback recruited by current coach Mike Leach at WSU. A product of Silver Creek High School in Longmont, Colo., Apodaca was named All-Colorado by the Denver Post as a senior after throwing for a state-high 3,849 yards with 44 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Apodaca confirmed that he has left the WSU football program, saying that there were many factors that played into the decision.

"There’s a lot of things that go into it," he said. "Being through the recruiting process already, coming out of high school it’s a tough thing to get right. I just want to make sure wherever I end up that I fit in, that I feel comfortable and like I said there were some different things that went into (the decision to leave) but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it."

The decision to transfer was made within the last few days, according to Apodaca and he will finish out the semester at WSU. He intends to play "at the highest level possible" and is unsure what his final destination will be.

"I also want to make sure Coug fans know that I really enjoyed my time here and having nothing but good memories playing for Washington State and wish my coaches and teammates the best luck in the future," Apodaca said. "I’ll be rooting them on."
