A pretty special Monday for, well, someone

A GRIP ON SPORTS • Today was supposed to be a quiet day in the world of sports. But Scotland's weather decided not to cooperate. When has it, really? Read on.

••••••••••

• Thanks to a day last week in which the wind blew like a Costco fan stuck on high, the British Open is finishing up on a Monday. Now that doesn't happen very often. And there was an amateur, Paul Dunne, tied atop the leaderboard as the final round began. That doesn't happen very often either. Other unusual things happening at St. Andrews this morning: Sergio Garcia playing well in a final of a major, Adam Scott not wearing sunglasses and the aforementioned amateur, Dunne, self-destructing on the second hole. Actually, that last one may have been expected, though the hole in which it would happen – the second is not that tough – may have been unforeseen. But Jordan Spieth competing to win another major in 2015? That's anything but surprising. The young Texan has played a lot like the patron saint of Texas golf, Ben Hogan, this year. He also has won the first two majors and, as I write this, is as good a bet as anyone to win his third. We'll see in about four hours.

• Speaking of golf, the Rosauers Open finished off yesterday at Indian Canyon with a terrific last-hole finish. Say what you will about golf as a spectator sport but having one guy make an eagle putt to pull into a tie for the lead, only to see another bury a birdie to win, that's exciting. By the way, the weather in Spokane was about 473 times better yesterday than it is today in Scotland.

•••

• WSU: The Pac-12's venture into selling media rights comes with a chance for a big reward. But with big risks as well.

• Indians: This time when the Indians took the lead in the top of the ninth, they held it. Spokane snapped a two-game losing streak with a 10-9 win at Boise on Sunday.

• Shadow: A 2-0 win over Bellingham on the road yesterday earned the Shadow its second consecutive Evergreen Premier League title.

• Golf: The Rosauers came down to the final hole. Actually, the final putt. Jim Meehan has the story of Corey Prugh's fourth title.

• Seahawks: Things got a bit ugly yesterday in Seattle as the 12th man lined up to ... well, get armbands that would allow them to buy individual game tickets. So yesterday wasn't even tickets themselves. But that didn't stop some folks from making a mess of the whole deal. ... Who will be the Hawks' nickelback when the season begins? ... Richard Sherman held his celebrity softball game yesterday.

• Mariners: Sorry, but I wasn't surprised yesterday when the M's lost 2-1 to the Yankees. Not surprised even though Felix Hernandez started and he's almost unhittable in new Yankee Stadium. Nope, it was the deciding game of a three-game series, so we all knew the M's would drop this one, didn't we? And the clincher? Fernando Rodney, sporting a new look, coming in to pitch the eighth in a tie game. ... Jesus Montero (pictured from earlier this season) had a good stint this time with the M's. Just not good enough to unseat someone hitting .230 or so. So he's headed back to Tacoma. ... Randy Johnson has a new career.

• Sounders: No one in the MLS has been worse recently than the Sounders. ... Speaking of worse, the penalty call that decided the Mexico/Costa Rica Gold Cup match was as bad as it gets. No contact but the official still calls a foul and decides the quarterfinal. Nice.

• Today is a travel day. It was supposed to be pretty relaxing. But now all I'll care about is who is winning the golf tournament. Oh well. Until later ...
