WSU football chat

Apr 20 2016, 11:41 AM

srchat: Now taking questions for our 11 a.m. WSU football chat.

Apr 20 2016, 12:01 PM

SnoCoug: Are there rosters available for Team Crimson and Team Gray?

Apr 20 2016, 12:02 PM

srchat: Not yet. The coaches will probably hold their draft this evening or tomorrow, and I'll put them up on SportsLink once they're available.

Apr 20 2016, 12:05 PM

Guest4911 (guest): How is the defensive line looking?ngalu tapas playing well?

Apr 20 2016, 12:06 PM

srchat: The defensive line has probably been the most interesting unit to watch this spring. Robert Barber has played really well in the middle, and his play will be key for the defense. Hercules Mata'afa is expectedly very good, and there have been some nice, depth-adding surprised in Garrett McBroom and Nick Begg. I think the coaches had hoped Tapa would be further along at this stage, however, and Daniel Ekuale's absence makes it tougher.

Apr 20 2016, 12:07 PM

Guest4040 (guest): Does James Williams have fumble issues?

Apr 20 2016, 12:08 PM

srchat: No, he's been secure with the football.

Apr 20 2016, 12:09 PM

Guest4040 (guest): Does the team have one more practice after the game on Saturday? Seems like they have done that in the past.

Apr 20 2016, 12:10 PM

srchat: Yeah, the story goes that one of Leach's Texas Tech teams had a real bad spring game, and he didn't have any way to make, ah, corrections, because the team had run out of practices. So now they always hold a final practice on the Tuesday after the spring game.

Apr 20 2016, 12:19 PM

SnoCoug: What's your W-L prediction for the 2016-17 season based on what you've seen so far this spring?

Apr 20 2016, 12:20 PM

srchat: 10-3

Apr 20 2016, 12:20 PM

Guest8933 (guest): do you think we run the ball more next year?

Apr 20 2016, 12:20 PM

srchat: Yeah, I do. Not a whole lot more, but I think there will be fewer games where they get away from the run.

Apr 20 2016, 12:22 PM

SnoCoug: 10-3? I like the way you think.

Apr 20 2016, 12:25 PM

Guest8933 (guest): how has the left side of the oline looked so far?

Apr 20 2016, 12:25 PM

srchat: I've been impressed with Dillard and O'Connell. I think it will hold up well.

Apr 20 2016, 12:26 PM

Guest2417 (guest): do you view the Boise game as a good indicator of how the season will go?

Apr 20 2016, 12:27 PM

srchat: That's probably as good a bellwether game as any, but I think we learned last year to not extrapolate too much either way from one early game. If WSU can go into Boise and come out with a win, though, the expectations of the Cougars will and should be pretty high.

Apr 20 2016, 12:32 PM

Guest2417 (guest): i see Begg has grab a few sacks this spring at DE. Do you see him on the field this year? where is he in the dept char

Apr 20 2016, 12:33 PM

srchat: He's been running with the twos a lot lately, but will get pushed back a bit when Daniel Ekuale returns. He's played well, but his sacks have primarily come against the backups to the backups. If he plays will depend on what he can do against better offensive linemen, plus the run/leverage stuff that is hard to tell w/out watching film.

Apr 20 2016, 12:35 PM

Guest2417 (guest): when will we know the crimson and grey team rosters for saturday?

Apr 20 2016, 12:35 PM

srchat: They will send them out at some point. Last year I believe it was a couple days before the event.

Apr 20 2016, 12:37 PM

Guest2417 (guest): thanks

Apr 20 2016, 12:49 PM

Guest4292 (guest): Do you think Charelson White will play more at safety or corner? Luani at Nickel? Hard to keep track on if some of this stuff will stick or if they are just giving guys a look.

Apr 20 2016, 12:50 PM

srchat: I think Luani at nickel was only with Parker Henry out. The way things are going, I'd expect White at corner. But a lot of that depends on where Robert Taylor (juco transfer) ends up ...

Apr 20 2016, 12:50 PM

Guest460 (guest): I'm not a familiar with the lineup this year. Who is replacing Dom Williams and whoever it is - how does he look?

Apr 20 2016, 12:51 PM

srchat: Tavares Martin slid over to the X position to replace Williams, and he's had a very good spring. His strengths are different than Williams, and the routes he has the most success on are different (comebacks vs. verticals), but the Cougars should still get a lot of production out of the position.

Apr 20 2016, 12:52 PM

Guest427 (guest): Looking ahead, roughly what week will the freshmen arrive on campus, and when does Fall practice start? The freshmen will get how many practices (@ Lewis & Clark highschool)?

Apr 20 2016, 12:53 PM

srchat: If memory serves, the freshmen typically arrive in mid-late June. Fall practice should start the first week of August, and fall camp is typically at Sacajawea Middle School in Lewiston.

Apr 20 2016, 1:00 PM

srchat: Alright, that's the end of our live chat. Thanks for joining. The transcript will be up shortly.
