Spring Gardening Update

Just checking in about the seed starting calendar I put together earlier in the Spring. So far we're right on schedule. We're just about 7 weeks out from the last freeze date here in the Spokane area so everything is planted in the greenhouse except…

Mystery Wildflowers

Snagged a couple more pics of early season wildflowers. The white flowers are Whitlow Grass but I can't figure out the pink flower. It looks like phlox of some kind but I couldn't find any phlox that are this early in the spring. They are…

Wendell Berry: An Ode to Wildflowers

I'm not sure what it is about wildflowers that I find so exciting, but they sure have captured my imagination over the last year. I suppose it's mostly their effortless beauty. This reflection on a serendipitous encounter with bluebells by Wendell Berry captures some of…

Master of Divinity and Master Food Preserver

I started using Twitter several months back and have really enjoyed it. In my pre-Twitter days I had sort of assumed it was an exercise in self-absorbed navel gazing, getting updates from random people about marginal details of their lives, i.e. - I'm eating dinner,…

First Wildflowers of the Season

We've got an ongoing project in the Goodwin house of photographing and chronicling all the native wildflowers of the Inland Northwest. We got a late start last year but were able to photograph and identify over 100 flowers. I have another year under my belt…

Year of Plenty

The Year of Plenty blog was created by Craig Goodwin in the winter of 2008 to chronicle the experiences of his family as they sought to consume everything local, used, homegrown or homemade. That journey was a wonderful introduction to people and movements in the Spokane area who are seeking the welfare of the community through local foods, farmers markets, community gardens, sustainable transportation, and more fulfilling and just patterns of consumption. In 2009 and beyond the blog will continue to report on these relationships and practices, all through the eyes of a family with young children. Craig manages the Millwood Farmers' Market, is a Master Food Preserver and Pastor at Millwood Presbyterian Church. Craig can be reached at goody2230@gmail.com
