Majestic Encounters – Eagle Aviary Tour
Visit the first tribal Eagle Aviary in the Northwest, owned by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. The tour is guided by Coeur d’Alene Tribal members and Coeur d’Alene Tribal Fish and Wildlife professionals. Check in Mountain Lodge Lobby at 8:45 a.m., depart casino at 9 a.m. and return at noon with lunch provided. This is the first aviary in the Pacific Northwest with a federal permit. The Coeur d’Alene Tribe plays a conservation role for these majestic birds that recover from injury but can’t live on their own who need permanent homes. The federal permit allows the Coeur d’Alene Tribe to keep captive bald and golden eagles and collect their feathers for ceremonial and religious purposes. The second part of our tour takes us to Birds of Prey Northwest. As we leave the Tribes Aviary, we leave the famous and most photographed landscape in the US, the Palouse rolling hills. We continue around beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene, home of the Tribe for thousands of years. We go by the Tribes first Mission and head to Birds of Prey Northwest operated by Janie Veltkamp. The whole mission is to educate, treat and hopefully return raptors back to the wild. The ones that cannot be released are Ambassadors who teach us their story. We welcome you to explore the story of the Tribe and our nations raptors.
