April 20-21. Spokane Symphony with the Spokane Civic Theatre. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to New York City in the turbulent 60’s as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice unravels in one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. From the first notes to the final breath, this Broadway masterpiece boasts a score by Bernstein & Sondheim that is widely considered to be the best ever created. This moving tale remains as powerful, poignant, and timely as ever. Friday-Saturday at 8 p.m.
