On Friday, July 22, 2022, Thomas Michael Roberts, loving partner, father, brother, and friend, passed away in Spokane, WA at the age of 69. Tom was born on April 22, 1953, in Missoula, MT to Thomas ("Joe") and Eileen Roberts. He was a proud Montanan and grew up close with his grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, siblings, and cousins. Tom was a bright student and a stand-out athlete. He played quarterback for Sentinel High School, also playing on their basketball and varsity tennis teams. After graduating in 1971, Tom went on to play cornerback for the University of Utah. There, he made lifelong friends and met Judith LaRue, with whom he shared over 20 years of marriage. He remained an avid University of Utah football fan. Tom graduated with a business degree in 1975, translating his love of sports into a five-year career in health club management. During that time, he moved from Salt Lake City to Oklahoma to California, ultimately landing back in the Pacific Northwest and enrolling in law school. Tom graduated from the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1984 and worked for the US District Court in Seattle. In 1985, Tom settled in Spokane, WA, a place he loved and would call his permanent home. Tom practiced law for over 30 years, often pro bono. He cared deeply about his clients and community and approached law as a means to serve both. In 2002, Tom met the love of his life, Lori, with whom he shared 20 amazing years. He was a proud, endlessly-supportive father to his sons, Connor and Michael, always there for them with wisdom and encouragement. He was a mentor to many and coached Connor's youth sports teams. In the tradition of his father, Tom played equal parts coach and teacher. Tom was an outstanding tennis player, golfer, and cook—passions he enjoyed with family and friends. Tom was incredibly funny and so, so kind. Whether you knew him for decades or just met him, he treated you like his closest friend. He adored Lori's sons and his nieces and nephews. He loved children—Lori's grandchildren and his great nieces and nephews—with whom he'd share his endless repertoire of jokes, stories, riddles, and songs. Tom is survived by his beloved longtime partner, Lori Poffenroth; his sons, Connor (Corinne Hutchinson) Roberts and Michael Roberts; his siblings, Joe (Susie) Roberts and Karen (Van) Troxel; and cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends too numerous to list but loved and cherished equally. Thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for Tom. The family would like donations to be made to Hospice of Spokane. A celebration of life will be held at a date to be determined.
