Residency challenge set for hearing
A hearing is set for Wednesday on a lawsuit challenging the residency of Spokane County Commission candidate John Roskelley. Roskelley, a Democrat, is seeking to return to his old commission seat by defeating incumbent Republican Commissioner Todd Mielke in District 1.
GOP hopes to oust Roskelley from ballot
The Spokane County Republican Party plans to go to court today to try knocking Democrat John Roskelley off the primary ballot. The county GOP filed a challenge to Roskelley’s current voter registration Friday, and asked Auditor Vicky Dalton to remove his name from the ballot for the District 1 commissioner race, where he’s the sole challenger to incumbent Republican Commissioner Todd Mielke. But an auditor has no authority to strike a name from the ballot, Dalton said, and the party must convince a Superior Court judge to do that.

Spokane County Commissioner Todd Mielke testified earlier this month in favor of a bill that would charge a $400 fee to citizens who appeal local land-use decisions to the state’s Growth Management Hearings Board. Mielke, a Republican, said he isn’t necessarily in favor of the fee but wants to stop appeals by people who are not directly affected by land-use changes under the state’s Growth Management Act.

County may add fairgrounds to PFD ballot
Spokane County Commissioners said Wednesday they might want a piece of the action when voters are asked for money to expand the existing Convention Center and add seats to the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Officials in charge of the two public facilities will ask voters April 17 to extend a pair of taxes used to pay for Spokane entertainment facilities.

County cuts preservation office funds
The Spokane historic preservation office will get only $5,000 from Spokane County in the $136.6 million 2012 budget county commissioners adopted Wednesday. The county has given $20,000 a year to the office since at least 2009, but will shift $15,000 to the Fox Theater next year. The money will reduce a multiyear county pledge to help restore the landmark theater as a regional performing arts venue.
