Firefighters quickly extinguish house blaze in Otis Orchards on Sunday afternoon

A neighbor saw smoke and flames coming from the home in the 3400 block of North Arden Road around 2:30 p.m., according to a news release. A dozen fire units responded to the fire, which burned a corner of the building. 

Spokane Valley Fire roundup: Crews from multiple departments helped put out garage fire

When serious fires happen it’s not unusual for crews from fire departments all over Spokane County to respond to help. Such was the situation on Feb. 16 when a Spokane Valley Fire Department crew was sent to assist with a two-alarm residential fire in the 6600 block of South Regal Road located inside Spokane County Fire District 8.

Liberty Lake artist and Selkirk Middle School seventh-grader Sindhu Surapaneni has come up with a way to connect Valentine’s Day and Black History Month with her newest painting titled “Everyone is Loved.”

Parishioners at the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in downtown Spokane have been faithfully raising money for years to build a shrine to St. Peregrine, the patron saint of people with cancer. Though there’s still money left to raise, organizers hope the shrine will be complete in time for St. Peregrine’s feast day on May 1.

Her desire to help children learn led her to a lengthy career with organizations like Child Care Aware and the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. Her dedication to children has earned her the 2022 YWCA Women of Achievement Award for Education.

Deputy Chief Frank Soto Jr. will take over as chief of the Spokane Valley Fire Department this Spring after the current chief retires.

Spokane Valley firefighters extinguish Sunday morning apartment blaze

The fire was reported before 11 a.m. in the 13100 block of East Valleyway Avenue, according to a news release from the Spokane Valley Fire Department. Heavy smoke was seen billowing from a door and window, but no one was in the unit at the time of the fire. 

Spokane Valley firefighters use frigid temperatures to train for ice rescues on Newman Lake

The ice rescue trainings happen each year to update first responders’ certifications that roll over every 18 months, said Craig Warzon, public information officer with the Spokane Valley Fire Department. The department held their event Wednesday. 

Spokane Valley homeowner credits cat for saving life during December house fire

A fire investigator traced the cause of the fire to Christmas lights hung on the front of the house. Spokane Valley Fire Department Fire Marshal Greg Rogers said the investigator can’t be more specific than that.

A business fire that could have led to severe damage was kept in check by a sprinkler system at the Spokane Industrial Park on Sullivan Road.

Spokane Valley Fire roundup: Person inside motor home escapes fire uninjured

There have been several motor home fires in the area recently and the Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to a similar call at about 5 p.m. Friday in the 4800 block of East Second Avenue. The one person inside at the time of the fire was able to escape without being injured.
