‘The Menu’ proves that a chef is the perfect modern movie villain

There are well-known archetypes of movie bad guys, and each says something about the culture from which they sprang. Menacing Russians were a Cold War-era staple, and given the turn of world affairs, they’re enjoying a recent resurgence. Evil tech bros have been cast as villains for years, reflecting our modern unease with the men manipulating the machinery on which we’re ever more reliant.

Tanya Tucker documentary charts the relaunch of a country icon

The affectionate making-of music documentary “The Return of Tanya Tucker – Featuring Brandi Carlile” charts the recording of Tucker’s Grammy-winning 2019 album “While I’m Livin,’ ” via fresh interviews, studio footage and archival film clips. In the film, Tucker calls the circumstances surrounding the record a “relaunch,” not a comeback. (This, despite the fact that it was the now-64-year-old singer’s first album of original material in 17 years. Her 2009 album “My Turn” featured only covers.)

‘House of the Dragon’ ended on the brink of war. What could Season 2 bring?

“The Black Queen,” Sunday’s Season 1 finale of HBO’s massive hit “House of the Dragon,” didn’t lack for ambition. The episode had an extended, midair dragon-on-dragon chase scene, the third(!) harrowing birth/death scene in only 10 episodes, the untimely death of a young character, and Seven Kingdoms on the brink of war preceded all season by character scheming, time jumps, and the prolonged leprosy spiral of King Viserys (the great Paddy Considine). He finally rotted off this mortal coil in Episode 8.

I’m no horror game buff, but I have to admit the genre is absolutely brimming with fantastic titles lately, with even more just around the corner. This year saw the release of hyped titles like Scorn and Dying Light 2 Stay Human, both of which were in development for nearly a decade. Today, 2021’s critically acclaimed Resident Evil Village receives a significant story expansion, Shadows of Rose.
