’Tis almost release season

The music business is hurting, but you wouldn’t know it from the avalanche of activity between now and Christmas. Despite the boffo business done this summer by Coldplay and Lil Wayne, the industry’s conventional wisdom still holds that the run-up to the holiday season is the best time for major-label singers and rappers to sell CDs (or digital albums). (“Paper Trail,” Sept. 30), Jennifer Hudson (self-titled, Sept. 30), John Legend (“Evolver,” Sept. 30), Bob Dylan (the outtakes collection “Tell Tale Signs,” Oct. 7), and Fall Out Boy (“Folie a Deux,” Nov. 4).

Top tales of survival

One of my favorite film genres is the post-apocalypse thriller. You know the kind of film I mean. It’s where something horrible happens – a plague, maybe, or nuclear war – and then we follow a group of characters as the world struggles to survive.

Indie horror tale offers a mixed bag

“Baghead” is the best of the shaky-cam spawn of “The Blair Witch Project.” Yes, it’s another how-low-can-you-go budget indie horror movie about making an indie horror movie.

Not the prettiest picture

When people think about World War II, wondering what it meant for the fate of museum-quality art is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Yet as the documentary “The Rape of Europa” demonstrates, this is a surprisingly vast and involving topic.

Open to experience

Josh Hamilton loves to travel. His travel obsession is one reason why the New York-based actor jumped at the chance to star in “Outsourced,” John Jeffcoat’s little film that opened the 2008 Spokane International Film Festival.
