Down Montana's Smith River

Boaters who beat the 7-to-1 odds for drawing a permit the float central Montana's Smith River are treated to four or five days of scenic floating and camping in a highly regulated piece of heaven. And even though the water was still high and off-color when Outdoors editor Rich Landers made the trip in the third week of June, the trout fishing is good, too.

Using rafts, this group was able to carry chairs, tables and many comforts on their five-day float trip on the Smith River.
