Warren Heylman architecture

Warren Heylman has been drawing since he was a child and designing buildings since he trawled distant waters as a young naval officer aboard the USS Warrick during the Korean War. Heylman left his modernist stamp on Spokane as he designed several important Spokane buildings, a handful of houses and some businesses in his career, which spanned from World War II to the present.

Prominent Spokane architect Warren Heylman accepts an award at a ceremony on Nov. 4, 2018 at the Montvale Event Center. Heylman was one of 10 award recipients honored for historic preservation efforts by the Spokane Preservation Advocates during its fifth year of awards.

Finishing touches were being placed in 1969 on this 162-unit project Lincoln Heights Garden Terrace Apartments, on 29th Avenue near Southeast Boulevard. Tenants began moving into the 15-building, $1.5 million complex. It was one of several projects in this area for low-income elderly people with rents partially subsidized by the federal government. All of the units were rented.

A common, yet still majestic sight in a town where railroads played such an important developmental part is this view of a midday freight train winding its way over the curves of Latah Junction above the freeway in 1975.
An increasing number of housing officials are predicting young families will be forced to abandon their dreams of suburban living in favor of living in close-to-downtown apartments of condominiums such as the Riverfalls Tower Apartments, shown in 1975.

Spacious in design, Spokane’s new International Airport terminal was rapidly nearing completion and fast becoming the pride of the region in 1965. Here is the central rotunda. The massive cylinder-like object will house a banquet room and cocktail lounge. At right will be the coffee shop. Sleeper rooms are on the mezzanine at the left.

The North Coast Life Insurance building and the Spokane International Airport are both buildings designed by Warren Heylman and Associates, 1990.
An award for “excellence in the use of concrete” was presented to architect Warren C. Heylman, who designed the Parkade, pictured in 1968. Grand award presentation was during a meeting of Washington Aggregate and Concrete Association at Glenden Beach, Ore. Contractor for the all-concrete parking structure was Sceva Construction Co. Concrete was furnished by Acme Concrete Co.
Entrance ramp to the Parkade, heading east on Main, rises up and over the sidewalk for a complete separation of motor and pedestrian traffic. Entrance to the basement goes under the sidewalk. 1967 photo.
The first of the overhead walkways connecting the Parkade to businesses in adjoining blocks takes shape over the West 400 block of Main in 1967.
The O’Malley, a Catholic Charities sponsored housing project for the elderly, was one of five newly completed structures in the state selected by the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association to receive awards for excellence in the use of concrete. Architect for the O’Malley, E 707 Mission, was Warren Cummings Heylman & Associates. Contractor was Kop Construction. Central Pre-Mix Co. provided the concrete.
