Gonzaga plays Duke in an NCAA college basketball game at the Maui Invitational, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018, in Lahaina, Hawaii.
They didn’t win the national championship. It only felt that way.
With the clock seemingly in slow motion over the last 8 minutes, Gonzaga’s lead, once at 16 points, dwindled to six, then two, before Duke finally tied it with 1:40 left.
This is what everybody wanted, right? No. 1 Duke versus No. 3 Gonzaga for the championship of the best early-season tournament of the year, the Maui Invitational. And the game lived up to it. All the way until the last seconds.
Brandon Clarke blocked RJ Barrett’s layup with one second remaining as third-ranked Gonzaga topped No. 1 Duke 89-87 to win the Maui Invitational championship on Wednesday at the Lahaina Civic Center.
