“Soul’s Concerto,” by Jasmin Rose-Perkins, eighth-grader at Salk Middle School, took second place in the middle school division of the 2020 Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust Art Contest. Jasmin writes: “My requiem was inspired by Bronislaw Huberman, a Polish violinist who saved nearly 1,000 Jewish people during the Nazis’ rise to power in 1933. Huberman had created the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, only accepting Jewish orchestral members from Europe. I created a violin, accompanied with a bow and different colored strings. The string’s colors (black, silver, green & orange) each represent something different. Black represents the orchestral members’ prospective death that was anticipated. Silver represents the hope everyone had for a better life. Green represents the Jewish lives that were spared because of the opportunity of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, and orange represents the passion Huberman had for saving and helping the Jewish community. Huberman’s acts were selfless and courageous, making him a true hero, saving many Jewish people in need.”
