The stately building in the center foreground pictured here circa 1900 was Spokane College, an attempt at a primary through college institution started by Methodists, founded in 1881. The building at right was a dormitory for the college. The land for the buildings came from northside homesteader David P. Jenkins, who also donated land for the Spokane County Courthouse. His daughter donated some of the family land for Spokane Coliseum.

The modern Spokane Regional Health District building sits in this 2020 photo near the site of the defunct Spokane College, an early educational institution founded by Methodists in 1882 and built on this site in 1883. The institution lasted less than a decade and the two college buildings were surrounded by active railroads when they were torn down in 1910.
