Auburn Crest Hospice hosts community butterfly release
Auburn Crest Hospice hosts the first community butterfly release at the Share Hope Memorial Garden in Coeur d’Alene -- open to community members who would like to memorialize and reflect on the loss of a loved one. With support from the University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Auburn Crest will be releasing nearly 50 Painted Lady butterflies, raised by Stephen Cook, Professor of Entomology at U of I.
On an early August evening, 50 butterflies were released from mesh containers into a Coeur d'Alene garden, as families listened to music and watched the insects fly. In many cultures, legends described butterflies as symbols of rejuvenation, hope and rebirth. Some oral traditions referred to them as being able to take messages to deceased loved ones.
