Summary

A week after upsetting previously undefeated Medical Lake, the Cougars leaned on their defense in a 21-0 win over visiting Freeman. The win gave Chewelah (6-1, 4-0) sole possession of first place and a direct route to the NEA crown.

The Cougars intercepted five passes and recovered a fumble, stymieing the Scotties (5-2, 3-1) from the start.

Derek Smith scored from 5 yards out in the first quarter to open the scoring. Caleb Wiebe later added a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown to give Chewelah an early 14-0 advantage. Smith found Dustin Crowell for a 7-yard passing touchdown in the second quarter to cap the scoring.

The Cougars have two remaining regular-season games – at Newport on Friday and home against Riverside on Oct. 26.
