Your Outdoor Photos: January 2021

The Inland Northwest is full of flora, fauna, waters, scenery and active people out to savor it all. Please visit this gallery regularly to share photos of your wild experiences, learning moments, hot discoveries, favorite trips. Help us build a visual tour of what's so great about the outdoors in this region through all four seasons. This photo gallery will be an inspiration to some people. To others it will be a reminder of why we love to live here – and get outside as much as possible.

My first visit to the renovated U.S. pavilion. Took the photo around 7pm last night (WED 2/10/21) during frigid temperatures (fingertips almost frost bitten). To my surprise .... there were other 'cold' people enjoying the park along with me. I'm very familiar with the park. Having worked at City Hall for a number of years ... I walked areas of the river gorge from Hamilton Street to Nat Park during my lunch breaks.

A Northern Saw-whet Owl peeks out at me from it's roosting perch as if to say who are you? They are about 8 inches tall can be hard to find usually up under tree branches down low nocturnal roosts during the day hunts at night for small mammals low whistled toots repeated about 2 times per second. Found it West of Cheney January 29 2021.

The first thing viewers will notice about this photo is it's not the Inland PNW. It doesn't require a keen eye. It's obvious because there is snow in the image. In fact, there was more snow in the Arizona desert when this image was captured than there is in my yard which is beneath the Silver Mountain gondola in Kellogg, ID. The photo is of mesas just inside Arizona's border with New Mexico about a mile south of Interstate 40. The land is part of the Navajo Nation just north of Zuni Pueblo. In addition to not being local, the photo is also dated. It was taken on Feb. 4, 2006. The Jim Meehans of the SR will likely recall that was one day before the Seahawks were ripped off in Super Bowl Extra Large. I was working in New Mexico at the time and flew my brother down from the Silver Valley so I would have someone to watch the game with. I took the photo while playing tour guide. I understand this photo will not be used. That's fine. I just wanted to share. Thanks! 😊

A Beautiful Day. On January 11th I decided to go to Mt. Spokane to do some birding. When I got closer to the Mountain the sun came out and it reflected off the snow flocked trees and provided a gorgeous day. I also saw the birds that had been posted.

A Beautiful Day. On Monday January 11th I took a ride up to Mt. Spokane to do some birding since there were reports of crossbills there. As I neared the mountain, the sun came out and blessed me with a picture perfect day with the sun reflecting off the snow flocked trees.

A hard to find Northern Pygmy Owl sits on it's perch waiting for it's prey to show it self. They are only 6.75 inches tall but can take prey bigger then itself without much of a problem they are a mighty mouse of owls. Turnbull Wildlife refuge January 11 2021.

Usually rummaging around on the ground but with a strong sound is the beautiful Spotted Towhee. Such distinguishable red eyes! They can hop in reverse to scratch the leaf litter and find food hidden beneath, so balanced that they can use one leg if injured. Getting off the ground certainly paid off here. Early morning of the new year 2021 in Hauser.
