A calliope hummingbird enjoys the bee balm in the Perennial Gardens at Manito Park. The tiny bird would wait up in a tree until people weren't around to feed on the flowers. I was fortunate to have my zoom lens on me so I didn't need to get too close. I captured the image earlier in July.

A rare hummingbird for Spokane: As of four days ago, a young male Anna's hummingbird has become a regular visitor at my home on the South Hill. His colorful gorget feathers are beginning to show, and will cover his neck and the crown of his head when he's mature. I actually had another Anna's -- a female, I think -- two weeks ago. The male has been in courting mode, "singing" loudly from the top of a bush and performing swoops and dives toward a female. I hope to see some fledglings soon!
