A chickadee was listening to (and answering) the distinctive three-tone call of another chickadee on the other side of my property on the South Hill today. It sounded like a round of Marco Polo.

On Friday I captured what appears to be an optical phenomena known as a solar corona. I first saw it through a window and thought it was a trick of the glass. I grabbed my camera and went outside. Yep, there was a colorful arc above the sun. It disappeared a few seconds later.

The cranes can often be located by their loud calls. They sometimes can be seen “dancing”, which is done to impress other cranes. Photo taken March 13, 2016.

The local fields provide food and resting areas for the cranes as they migrate to nesting grounds in Alaska. It is common to find them sharing the grain leftovers with cattle in last year’s corn fields. Photo taken March 13, 2016.

We had some drama at Riverfront Park today. One enraged Canada goose was trying to chase away other geese, ducks and even humans. I wonder if nesting season had it all riled up. Geese at the park are usually so mellow.
