Your Outdoors Photos: March 2018

The Inland Northwest is full of flora, fauna, waters, scenery and active people out to savor it all. Please visit this gallery regularly to share photos of your wild experiences, learning moments, hot discoveries, favorite trips. Help us build a visual tour of what's so great about the outdoors in this region through all four seasons. This photo gallery will be an inspiration to some people. To others it will be a reminder of why we love to live here -- and get outside as much as possible.

  • This Common Goldeneye takes flight by first 'walking on water'. Birds take flight from the water in different ways, depending on their wings and the weight of their bodies. Some, like this Goldeneye and large birds like swans need to run on the surface of the water before taking off. There are other birds that can take off straight from the water.

  • A male Downy Woodpecker which is remarkably similar to the larger Hairy Woodpecker. The Downy is quite a bit smaller yet shares the same red poll, black marking and white bars on its wings. One of the first hints that it is the Downy rather than the Hairy besides body size is the shorter beak. Photo taken on Mingo Mountain, Kettle Falls, WA. March 6.

  • Washington state is full of classic old barns. The early morning sun provided just the right light for this scenic view along Hwy 25 south of Davenport, WA, on Friday March 9th.

  • While driving east on Hwy 84, along the Columbia Gorge, we finally spotted a herd of the Big Horn Sheep. I was able to capture this shot of all seven rams as they were grazing on the grassy slopes, March 12, 2018.

  • Big Horn sheep roam the grassy slopes of the Columbia Gorge. We found them closer to the Hwy 84 this last weekend, giving us a nice opportunity to capture some clear shots of them. The herd we saw was a group of seven rams, here are two of them being playful.

  • Driving along the Columbia Gorge, one can spot the Big Horn Sheep, grazing along the steep grassy slopes. The Big Horn sheep are actually related to goats. This is one of the younger rams among the group of seven we saw on March 12th.

  • A host of waterfowl congregate in the Pend Oreille valley during spring thaw, where food sources are abundant. Canada goose, tundra swan, pintail, mallard, goldeneye and other waterfowl species all gather at this popular feeding spot.

  • I had to ask what this web footed bird was. It is a Cormorant and really belongs near the ocean. There have been 5-6 behind the dam in Riverfront park on the caution balls and wires. Taken March 5, 2018

  • Swan Lake. When is a lake not a lake? When its supposed to be a hay field. This hay field in Marshall just off Cheney Spokane and Gardner has been flooded for over a year. It has become a place for all sorts of waterfowl to congregate. Including this bevy of Swans on Sunday March 4th, 2018
