Sturgeon fisheries closed on two sections of the Columbia River

FISHING – Fishery managers from Washington and Oregon have set closure dates for sturgeon fisheries on two sections of the Columbia River while deferring consideration of a recreational smelt fishery until more is known about the size of this year’s run, according to a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife news release. Starting on Feb. 4, anglers are required to release any sturgeon they intercept from Bonneville Dam upstream to The Dalles Dam. In addition, the retention fishery for white sturgeon from John Day Dam to McNary Dam will close effective Feb. 12.

Snowshoe, fat bike race at Silver Mountain

RACING – There will be a snowshoe and fat bike race at Silver Mountain next Sunday. There will be two snowshoe races, one 2.2 miles and the other 4.4 miles. The race will start at the bottom of the tubing hill. The elevation gain is 356 feet.

Silver Mountain back-country bonanza this weekend

WINTERSPORTS – Silver Mountain will host a bevy of back-country skiing skill instruction next weekend. On Saturday, there will be an avalanche class. Participants will learn how to assess risk and make decisions. No prior classes are required, but participants must be able to comfortably ride black diamond terrain in trees.

Meeting on exploratory drilling in Sandpoint area upcoming

NATURAL RESOURCES – A mining company hopes to conduct exploratory drilling on National Forest lands within the Sand Creek-Lake Pend Oreille watershed. The Idaho Panhandle National Forests will hold a public meeting on Feb. 8 from 6-8 p.m. at the Sandpoint Ranger District Office (1602 Ontario St., Sandpoint).

Final SpIFF film honors climber Fred Beckey

CLIMBING – The Spokane International Film Festival’s final film will be the documentary “Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey.” Beckey, a legendary Seattle-area mountaineer, died in October. The climber wrote dozens of books and is credited with notching more first ascents than any other American mountaineer.

University of Idaho seeks forest stewards

FORESTS – The University of Idaho Extension is looking for candidates for the Idaho Master Forest Stewards program. Graduates of the program train to help forest owners and others learn about Idaho’s forests. Students receive 70 hours of training in forest management, education and outreach. Following the course participants are expected to volunteer 70 hours doing various types of outreach, according to a news release.

Sandpoint tracking class upcoming

TRACKING – North Idaho College’s Sandpoint campus is offering an “Animal Tracking and Sign Interpretation” class on Saturday. The class was rescheduled from earlier in the month due to bad weather, according to a news release. The class will be taught by wilderness expert and author Brian Baxter. The class goes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will meet in the south parking lot of the NIC at Sandpoint Center at 102 S. Euclid St.

Fat bike race this weekend

Cycling – Fat bikers are invited to race at the 49 Degrees North Nordic center on Saturday. The race will start at 11 a.m. Registration is from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on race day. Race registration costs $20. For Nordic pass holders race fee is $7.09.

Coeur d’Alene wolf trapping class upcoming

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game will host two wolf trapping classes in February. The classes will be held on February 9 and February 10. Each class is a separate, stand-along session. Idaho rules require the completion of a wolf trapping class before purchasing wolf trapping tags, according to a news release.

Bills threatening waterway access could be amended

The two Washington bills that could have statewide implications for anglers and boaters may be amended to address water access concerns. House Bill 2521 and Senate Bill 6152 would give counties authority to close roads and other public right-of-ways that abut a waterway for “the protection of public safety.”
