Korean War soldier’s remains flown to Spokane for proper burial

U.S. Army Cpl. Donald Therkelsen died 62 years ago, 10 days before the Korean War armistice. The 23-year-old medic died two years after marrying his wife, Patricia, and three months before his daughter, Linda, was born. On Thursday, his remains were flown to Spokane, a place the Illinois native likely never visited.

Accused shooter tried to give victim medical aid

Edward Bushnell, the man accused of fatally shooting another man Tuesday in East Central Spokane, attempted to provide medical aid to the victim, according to new court documents. Bushnell, 27, told police that while longboarding near Altamont Street and Fifth Avenue, he heard a woman screaming. That’s when he saw William Poindexter, 45, grabbing and throwing a woman to the ground.

Victim in Wednesday shooting identified

Spokane police released new details Wednesday about a fatal shooting that followed an apparent domestic dispute in East Central Spokane. William R. Poindexter, 45, was shot twice in the back and died at a hospital. Edward Bushnell, who police say intervened in a fight between Poindexter and his girlfriend, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a second-degree murder charge.

A man was arrested late Tuesday afternoon in connection with a fatal shooting in East Central Spokane earlier in the day. Edward A. Bushnell was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.

Airway Heights mayor rejects calls to resign over posting

The embattled mayor of Airway Heights has refused to resign after the town’s City Council voted Monday to strip him of his official duties in the aftermath of a Facebook posting widely perceived as racist. The resolution, passed 5-1 by the council, also levels sanctions against Patrick Rushing. He came under fire last week for comparing President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to “monkeys.”

Two boys perish in Colville fire

COLVILLE – A fire that consumed an apartment building killed two children early Friday. Neighbors reported hearing a blast followed by a series of smaller explosions at the apartment, 471 N. Cedar St. in Colville, shortly after 1:30 a.m. Portions of the wooden, two-story building already were engulfed in flames when Colville firefighters arrived, authorities said.

Five injured in explosion at Newport aerospace plant

NEWPORT, Wash. – An explosion that ripped through an aerospace company in Newport late Tuesday night injured five employees, including one critically, and could have implications for the local economy. “Obviously, they’re one of our largest employers,” said Jamie Wyrobek, economic development director for the Pend Oreille County Economic Development Council. “It’s right there in the top 10.”

Explosion rips through Zodiac Aerospace in Newport

An explosion ripped through an aerospace company in Newport, Washington Tuesday night, shattering glass and causing a section of the roof to collapse. The blast, which occurred shortly before 9 p.m., sent five people to the hospital. At least one person was taken by helicopter to Spokane.
