Another giant chance

PULLMAN – Potential? Sure, this day has lots of it for Washington State. "It's huge. It's bigger than a basketball game," senior forward Ivory Clark said. "It goes back to bringing respect back to this program. If we win, we have a chance to crack the Top 25. This is a huge opportunity for us, and we've got to go out and make the most of it."

Cougs clean clocks

PULLMAN – Some nights it just looks easy, but it's been a long time since things looked this simple for Washington State. The Cougars showed no signs of slacking off against a weaker Arizona State team and in the process picked up their biggest Pac-10 basketball win in nearly three years, by a 75-55 final.

Cougs sophomore is all caught up

The Cougars are off to a 12-2 start this season, and a lot of it has to do with the return of Daven Harmeling, who missed all but a few minutes of the season opener last year with a shoulder injury. Harmeling was a role player in 2004-05 as a freshman, but he's come back this season as a redshirt sophomore to become a key player.

Cougars getting no respect

Washington State hasn't quite grabbed the attention of the outside men's college basketball world yet, as was made clear when the newest Top 25 polls came out Monday. But if nothing else, WSU has obviously turned plenty of heads within the Pac-10 after its split in Southern California last week.

Cougars win one for road

LOS ANGELES – This could have been another brutally difficult Pac-10 loss for Washington State. In fact, it's possible that it should have been another hard-fought, narrow defeat. But Kyle Weaver wasn't going to let it happen.

History repeats itself

WESTWOOD, Calif. – The Cougars nearly owned the college basketball world for a day. Instead, they watched yet another game at UCLA slip away. Washington State, 0-24 all time against top-ranked teams coming in, attempted a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute that could have given it a tie or a lead against No. 1 UCLA. But both missed the mark, and the Bruins walked off with a 55-52 win in front of an anxious Pauley Pavilion crowd of 11,102.

Weaver works to make believers

When Washington State takes the Pauley Pavilion floor tonight to play No. 1 UCLA, one player may be less interested in looking around at the championship banners, John Wooden in the stands or the coeds in the crowd. One of them, almost certainly, will look to the bucket in front of the WSU bench and wonder what could have been.

Cougars look to continue fast start

All those who had Washington State at 11-1 heading into the Pac-10 men's basketball season may now fill out their Mensa applications. Surprising just about every outside observer known to man, the Cougars have completed their non-conference season with that sterling mark. Although their toughest games lie ahead of them – none more difficult than the league opener Thursday at No. 1 UCLA – there is no disputing that the Cougars will be entering Pac-10 play looking as good as they have in years.

Cougs deliver the goods

SEATTLE – Tony Bennett managed to describe his team's final non-conference game of the season in two short words Thursday night. "Bad. Good," the coach said.

Cougs face stern test

SEATTLE – No one knows just how good this Washington State team is, even after a 10-1 start that has its fans abuzz with excitement under first-year head coach Tony Bennett. A week from now, a road trip to No. 1 UCLA will probably offer an excellent indication of the Cougars' true nature. But for now, tonight's game against San Diego State – to be played in Seattle's KeyArena – might just do the trick.

Cougars buckle down

PULLMAN – After an unusually short media session, a reporter shrugged to Kyle Weaver that there wasn't much to ask after a choppy, ragged 69-50 win over Cal State Northridge. "Sorry, one of those games," Weaver said in assent.

Cougs and Vandals worlds apart

PULLMAN — Both Washington State and Idaho are taking a couple of days off from practice to allow their players to focus on finals this week, but the break comes with the two teams in wholly different conditions. After the Cougars defeated the Vandals 66-54 late Saturday night in Moscow, the two teams sport near-opposite records with WSU at 9-1 and Idaho at 1-8.

Erickson mum on way out

PULLMAN — Dennis Erickson had just climbed aboard a Beechcraft Beechjet with Arizona State athletic director Lisa Love shortly after noon on Sunday, but he wasn't going to get away without someone letting him know what he was leaving behind. Doug Gadwa, a 1979 Idaho graduate and the president of Inter-State Aviation, Inc., at the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport, strode over to the plane and doffed his Idaho Vandals hat. Reaching into the plane, Gadwa extended the hat towards Erickson.

Cougs continue winning ways

MOSCOW, Idaho – The excitement level wasn't the same, the level of play wasn't the same, but the result was good enough for Washington State. The Cougars, playing their first game since knocking off Gonzaga on Tuesday night, took the short trip across the state line to Idaho and came back with a 66-54 victory in front of 1,981 at Cowan Spectrum on Saturday night.

Here again, gone again

Dennis Erickson is on the move again. The well-traveled football coach told University of Idaho athletic director Rob Spear during a short meeting Saturday night that he is taking the coaching job at Arizona State University.

Looking for new direction

PULLMAN – If the foundation has loosened beneath the Washington State University football program, the Cougars coaching staff appears to be doing everything in its power to shore things up in a hurry. In the aftermath of a third consecutive season without a bowl game, WSU is in the midst of an all-out recruiting effort to shore up the depth problems that have plagued it.

Cougars guard against letdown

So Washington State has beaten Gonzaga and is riding high after thrilling its biggest home crowd in more than a decade. Tonight, we'll find out what happens next.
Sports

WSU, going away

PULLMAN – Maybe it was the two losing seasons they endured before it. Maybe it was the home crowd, bigger than any they had seen in their lives. Maybe it was the opponent, a Gonzaga team that has dominated both the local airwaves and the Cougars for nearly a decade. Or maybe it was the knowledge that one member of the 10,755-person crowd, their former coach, is slated for hip replacement surgery this week. Whatever the reason, the Washington State Cougars were not going away quietly Tuesday night, and they got a win that could end up being a program's turning point for it.
Sports

Opportunity time for Cougars

PULLMAN – Gonzaga will play Washington State at 7 tonight attempting to win another basketball game in the midst of an impossibly difficult stretch of December games. WSU, on the other hand, will be attempting to win a whole lot more than just a game.

Freshman Stotler lifts WSU

PULLMAN – On Friday, Washington State's veteran players tried to convince the younger players that Saturday's game against Eastern Washington was a game they needed to win. At least one of those fresh faces got the message.
Sports

Cougars hope to stay perfect

If December turns out to be as kind as November to the Washington State men's basketball team, a whole lot of folks around Beasley Coliseum may be in for a pleasant surprise this season. Washington State finished its first month at 7-0, the best November in school history. At 6 (PST) tonight, the Cougars take the floor in Salt Lake City with the hopes of carrying that success into a new month against Utah.
Sports

Unblemished!

PULLMAN – Winning is starting to look routine for Washington State, which is, of course, anything but routine based on its recent and even its not-so-recent history. The Cougars, with a 62-50 win Wednesday night over Portland, moved to 7-0, matching their second-best start in the last 58 years.

It’s official: no bowl for WSU

PULLMAN – The door has slammed shut on Washington State. Jim Sterk, WSU's director of athletics, confirmed Tuesday that there is no possible way for the Cougars to get into a football bowl game, something that had been readily apparent for some time but had not become official.
Sports

Bruce, Frampton All-Pac-10

PULLMAN – Washington State's football season is probably over, but even if that's the case, a pair of Cougars have been rewarded for their efforts this season with the announcement Monday that they earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors. Defensive end Mkristo Bruce, who led the team with 11 sacks, and safety Eric Frampton, who had a team-best 100 tackles, were named to the all-conference defense. Quarterback Alex Brink and wide receiver Jason Hill earned second-team honors. Save for Brink, who is a junior, all three were playing their senior seasons.

Cougars buck the Broncos

For the most part, Washington State played well and shot well in its first five games, sprinting out to an undefeated start. On Saturday in the Spokane Arena, the Cougars did neither. And they won anyway.
