Grueling national boxing championships reach championship round

The emotions flowed as freely as the punches Friday afternoon at the USA Boxing National Championships. Light flyweight Leroy Davila pounded out a win over Melik Elliston, then thought about his 1-year-old daughter back in New Jersey. Two bouts later at Northern Quest Resort and Casino, flyweight Shawn Simpson tried to take something positive out of taking down best friend Cristian Williams. But nothing in this poster-sized card of 20 Elite bouts at Northern Quest Resort and Casino could match the lightweight bout between Chicagoan Kenneth Sims, and tireless Luis Sedano.

EWU remains in good hands

For years, the Eastern Washington receivers had someone to look up to. Ashton Clark and Cory Mitchell hope they still do. Brandon Kaufman, Nick Edwards and Greg Herd all stood 6-foot-3 or taller, but it wasn’t their height that made an impression on Clark, the top returning receiver for the Eagles. “They taught me to work hard and to take your opportunity,” said the 5-foot-11 Clark. “Those guys work so hard, that it definitely made me work harder.”

Brother, sister boxing at USA championships

Back in Lynn, Mass., the Ellis family took tough love to a new level: The basement. With fists flying. Rashidi and younger sister Rashida absorbed some life lessons along with those punches from older brother Akeem, and both are trying to follow him on the path to stardom. One stop is the USA Boxing National Championships, which conclude Saturday at Northern Quest.

Eastern pleased practices under way

The Eastern Washington University football players were fairly pumped up for the first day of spring drills Thursday, some literally. “I’m really excited,” said safety Jordan Tonani, who gained 10 pounds of muscle this winter on top of gaining a lot of confidence on the field last fall.

Mark of an MVP

With a minute to play in overtime and the game still in doubt, Cal’s Layshia Clarendon delivered the signature play of the Spokane Regional. The Bears had a 61-57 lead but needed to burn some clock. Clarendon did that and more, moving the ball up the court for 25 seconds, then driving the lane for a 12-foot, pull-up jumper with 38 seconds left that proved to be the game-winner in a 65-62 victory.

Boxer Simpson not weighting around

Last year Shawn Simpson thought he needed to shed a few pounds to increase his chances of making the U.S. Olympic boxing team. But less weight left him weaker and less effective. He failed to make the U.S. team for London. At this week's national championships he will be fighting at 114 pounds, a weight he says has him feeling much more comfortable in the ring.

Eastern Washington readies for spring football

Having something to prove – but not too much – may be the best situation for the Eastern Washington football team, which opens five weeks of spring practice on Thursday. The Eagles are coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history – 11 wins, a Big Sky Conference title and a spot in the FCS semifinals – but have plenty of opportunities to improve.

California, LSU work through tough times to get this chance

For the California women’s basketball team, adversity is like a useless rear-view mirror, tossed aside on the road to the Sweet 16. For LSU, tough times are seemingly their own reward, something to cherish almost as much as a chance to advance another step in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

Whitworth turned losses into success

There’s nothing like a few losses to build some confidence. Ironically, that’s what happened in November to the Whitworth men’s basketball team, which dropped its first two games of the year but learned about itself in the process.

Shock open season on road

For the Spokane Shock, the road back to the postseason starts with a road trip. Make that three. Today’s Arena Football League opener at Cleveland is the first of three straight away games while the Spokane Arena is occupied by the Spokane Chiefs and the NCAA Women’s Basketball West Regional.

Ferris turns away Lewis and Clark 1-0

The Ferris defense weathered the storm Wednesday afternoon at Albi Stadium. That came mostly from Lewis and Clark, but also from the elements. The Saxons handled both in a 1-0 win over the Tigers in the Greater Spokane League boys’ soccer opener for both teams.

Injuries hurt EWU men throughout season

It happened Feb. 28 at Reese Court: the final insult added to the injuries that defined the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball season. Inside a minute to play, a 30-footer by Northern Colorado’s Tate Unruh found the backboard and then the net. Tie game. The Eagles couldn’t find an answer in overtime, losing a crucial game and eventually falling one game short of a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Shock receiver Solomon catching on to the indoor game

Everything moves a little faster in Arena League Football. After practice Tuesday afternoon, the Spokane Shock receivers had worn out the live quarterbacks and turned to the automatic passing machine. Then they turned up the speed. At 88 miles an hour, the ball is just a blur and barely catchable.
