Rich in talent

To illustrate how deep New Mexico State's roster is, consider that Tyrone Nelson, an All-WAC first-team pick last season, has yet to crack the starting lineup. "He's playing anywhere between 18-20 minutes," said Idaho coach George Pfeifer said. "That would define their horsepower."

New University of Idaho football coach Robb Akey's staff is essentially complete. The four newest additions: Ex-Minnesota linebackers coach Mark Criner, who will be the defensive coordinator; Montana running backs coach Luther Carr, whose duties haven't been determined; Utah graduate assistant Dan Finn, who will coach the offensive line; and Cornell assistant Roderick Plummer, the special teams coordinator as well as helping with the offense.

Akey adds Axman to staff

The University of Idaho assistant coaching staff is up to five, including the addition of Steve Axman as offensive coordinator, head football coach Robb Akey said Wednesday. He was with UW from 1999-2002 as quarterbacks coach – the last two years as assistant head coach.

Watson, Vandals snap losing streak

MOSCOW, Idaho – It was a long, strange night for University of Idaho senior guard Keoni Watson. He set a career high with seven assists and had a season-high six rebounds. He got benched at the start of the second half because he delved too deeply into coaching instead of playing.

Vandals temper bad news with good

The University of Idaho men's basketball team was dealt another tough blow when it learned this week that center Mike Kale won't play this season. The Vandals' future outlook is brightening, however, with news that former Washington Husky Harvey Perry is transferring to Idaho. Kale, a junior who has more Division I experience than anyone on Idaho's roster, hasn't played this season because of patellar tendinitis in his knee. He said last week he was optimistic that he would be able to return for Saturday's home game against South Dakota State. Instead, the 6-foot-8, 240-pounder from Henderson, Nev., will undergo surgery.

Big Sky-ready Eagles rout Vandals

There were numerous signs of trouble for Idaho's men's basketball team in the first half. Eastern Washington led by seven and every starter had scored except Rodney Stuckey, last year's Big Sky Conference MVP. Kellen Williams broke his season high for points – with 3:30 left.

Akey a change of pace

MOSCOW, Idaho – The thought crossed Robb Akey's mind. He hadn't coached or played football at the University of Idaho, which was a prerequisite to landing the head coaching job in the Vandals' last seven searches. That streak started with Dennis Erickson, who replaced Jerry Davitch (1978-81) in 1982. It ended with Dennis Erickson in 2006.

He’s a shooting star for the Vandals

Senior guard Keoni Watson leads the University of Idaho men's basketball team in numerous statistical categories: field goals made and attempted, 3-pointers made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, turnovers, steals, points ... We could go on, but it would cut into the space for Watson's comments in The Spokesman-Review's weekly Q & A.

The Seahawks were knocked off for the second time in a month by upstart San Francisco, frittering away three quarters of dominating everything but the scoreboard before the 49ers struck for three long scoring drives to fuel a 24-14 victory Thursday night in front of an announced crowd of 67,650 at Qwest Field.
