Education notebook: Forum will focus on EVSD proposed levies

East Valley School District will hold a community forum on two proposed levies Jan. 23 at East Valley High School Library, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave., and Feb. 3 at the district administration office at the Walker Center 3830 N. Sullivan Road.. Superintendent Kelly Shea will be available to answer questions.

Education Notebook: STCU awards $27,000 in grants to area teachers

Spokane Teachers Credit Union continues its tradition of honoring local educators this year by awarding over $27,000 in grants. So far, 80 lucky teachers have been drawn at random to receive a $250 grant to be spent on any classroom need. Another 28 winners will be drawn in early November. These awards are available to 23 public school districts in Eastern Washington, representing over 6,500 educators and school staffers. The following winners are listed alphabetically by school district.

Education Notebook: Cheri Stelzer earns ‘Above and Beyond’ award for West Valley band camp help

Cheri Stelzer recently received the West Valley High School Above and Beyond Award after being nominated by band director Jim Loucks. Stelzer facilitated many tasks at the WVHS band camp, including planning all meals and fitting all the student musician’s uniforms. The band students attended the school board meeting to cheer for Stelzer during the surprise presentation of the award. Glover Middle School hosting design open house

Education notebook: Medical Lake High installs new safety fence

Medical Lake High School recently announced on its website the construction of a new fence on their campus. The fence is intended to increase safety for student travel between two main buildings and prevents unauthorized persons from traveling through the campus courtyard. The new fence comes in addition to a new single-entry system for the main door.

Education notebook: County libraries earn outreach award with $28,973 grant

The Spokane County Library District has been presented the “All of Us” Community Engagement Outreach Award by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region. The award came with a $28,973 grant, which SCLD says will be used for a project in partnership with Dishman Hills High School of the West Valley School District. The project, “The Fit & Lit: Health Literacy for Teens” aims to provide activities, classes and resources to Dishman Hills High School students experiencing homelessness or poverty.

Review: ‘Oklahoma!’ is a classic for modern audiences

For the modern American masses, a play like “Oklahoma!” might not hold wide appeal without promises of stark, modernizing changes. That was the route taken with its recent Broadway revival, and that’s the route taken by most new productions of Western genre stories in television and film. Today’s audiences want their tales of American mythic landscapes to take on a grittier, revisionist sensibility with harder violence and updated political and social themes.
