Helmet Laws Are Public’s Business

The motorcycle enthusiasts who want Washington state's motorcycle helmet law repealed, and the 20-plus Washington state legislators sponsoring the House bill to do just that, should spend some time with head-injury victims. Start in the intensive care unit. Sit in the waiting room with the victim's family. Comfort them when their loved one dies.

It’s Time To Find Common Ground

Baby Think It Over is a doll that mimics a real baby. It cries every three hours, all hours of the day and night. High school students, trying to learn about parenting, hate these wailing dolls. They are given a key that turns the crying off, but they must hold the key in for 20 minutes, the time it takes to feed an actual baby. Baby Think It Over costs $220. Expensive. A typical life skills class would need 25 or more. That's $5,500. Today, on the 22nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, we thought of Baby Think It Over.

Start Year With New Attitude

A couple of weeks ago we asked if any readers had given up New Year's resolutions. We received a wonderful letter from Eileen Volz of Sandpoint. She wrote: "Last year in January, as I sat in the hot tub at the local health club, I found myself checking the clock to see if it was time to go. I went over a mental grocery list and a schedule of things to do that day. I realized I was not enjoying where I was at the moment. Then I began to see I was never really living in the moment. My resolution then and there was to 'be where I am.'

Individuals Make The Difference

The world's going to hell in a handbasket. What a cliche. What a reality these past few weeks. In Russia, young men are slaughtering other young men. Closer to home, two young men, without obvious remorse, are charged with killing an innocent, Felicia Reese. Hey, a handbasket isn't big enough for all this hell-bound violence and tragedy. We need dump trucks, thousands of them.
