Northport’s Guglielmino sweeps sprints at State 1B meet

It took two years, six sprints and a venture into the penultimate field event on the schedule of the State 1B, 2B and 1A track and field championships at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field for Kassie Guglielmino to finally feel the disappointment of defeat in the state meet. But the personable sophomore sprinter from Northport – after successfully defending her titles in the State 1B 100-, 200- and 400-meter races earlier Saturday – took her late-afternoon fourth-place finish in the long jump remarkably well.

Lakeside’s Egland vaults to 1A record

Anandae Egland played the waiting game to perfection Friday afternoon during the first day of competition at the State 1A/2B/1B track and field championships at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field. The Lakeside junior, who had won the State 1A pole vault each of the last two years, overcame a prolonged period of inactivity to capture a third straight title with a record-setting vault of 11 feet, 6 inches.

Sierra Bezdicek almost keeps 3A golf title in family

Sierra Bezdicek did everything she could Wednesday to keep the individual State 3A girls golf championship in the family. But the Mt. Spokane freshman was ultimately done in by a nasty double-bogey on the 315-yard par-4 15th hole at Liberty Lake Golf Course and came up a couple of strokes short in her determined effort to capture the title her older sister and senior teammate, Savana, won last spring.

East Valley heads to State 2A soccer semifinal with strong defense

The opponent in the semifinals of the State 2A boys soccer tournament remains a bit of a mystery to Jeff Paulus. But the familiarity – and confidence – the third-year East Valley coach has with, and in, the veteran defenders on his own team helps ease a lot of the anxiety that stems from the unknown.

Shock take tumble to Tampa Bay

The Spokane Shock closed one of the most disjointed weeks in franchise history Friday night with an equally unhinged performance on the field. And in the end, with midweek roster addition Casey Hansen struggling at quarterback, they simply weren’t able to cobble together enough offense in suffering a 51-42 loss to visiting Tampa Bay in an Arena Football League showdown witnessed by an Arena crowd of 9,320.

Roundup: Ferris dispatches Davis to earn state soccer berth

Isaac Peter doesn’t need to be completely healthy to be the best player on the field. Ferris’ senior forward proved that Saturday afternoon at Albi Stadium by scoring both of the Saxons’ goals in a 2-1 4A regional boys soccer win over Davis of Yakima, despite being hampered by a sore – and heavily bandaged – hamstring.

Steve Bergum: CdA resort caddies have tales to tell

While the most memorable of bad shots can sometimes leave a long-lasting impression – or a deep bruise – a forecaddie’s worst nightmare is trying to track down balls for golfers who string their bad shots together, say for the entire 18 holes.

EWU’s Red-White Game features battle to back up Mitchell

The competitive battle that was waged all spring for the chance to back up Eastern Washington University’s starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell next fall was not decided during the Eagles’ annual Red-White Game at Roos Field on Saturday. But it seems safe to say that none of the three involved – Anthony Vitto, Greg Panelli and Nick Gauthier – did any major damage to their chances during a spirited matchup that was called after three quarters with the Red team leading 28-14.

Happy on bench

As an assistant coach with the NBA’s Boston Celtics, Kevin Eastman’s typical work day consists of very little that is typical. Long sessions in the film room, daily practices, game preparation, scouting and red-eye charter flights between NBA cities are all part of the drill for the former head men’s basketball coach at Washington State University, who resigned following the 1998-99 season to pursue other basketball interests.

‘Other’ Mitchell impresses at Eastern Washington scrimmage

With the talent and depth Eastern Washington University has returning at wide receiver from last year’s NCAA Division I championship football team, it probably isn’t time to cue in “the other Mitchell” just yet. But if Cory, the older brother of Eagles starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, continues to dazzle the way he did in Saturday’s 68-play spring scrimmage at Roos Field, that time might not be all that far off.
