THINKING MAN’S QB

How can you tell Philadelphia Eagles third-string QB Jay Fielder isn’t loaded with talent? Just listen to his coaches: “He’s an intelligent kid,” head coach Rich Kotite says. “He’s very, very smart,” quarterbacks coach Zeke Bratkowski echoes. “One thing about him is he’s really smart,” scout Todd Brunner points out. Who cares if he can actually play? Get your Phil In his Hall of Fame induction address, Phil Rizzuto broke up everyone with an account of how he nearly jumped to the Mexican League for a $10,000 salary and a Cadillac. But he said his wife, Cora, told him: “You go to Mexico, you go without me.” Added Rizzuto: “It was a time when you couldn’t get butter, you couldn’t get stockings, you couldn’t get a girdle. Not that she needed a girdle. … she was pretty well built.”

Texas’ air apparent The Dallas Cowboys’ latest acquisition is a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a $75,000 machine that pumps oxygen into the bloodstream. The machine got rave reviews from the Vancouver Canucks, who said it repaired sore muscles and raised energy. The device looks like a sawed-off cockpit. Players strap on a mask and take a seat behind the console before a trainer seals the chamber. A staff member then turns on the oxygen tanks, and players listen to CDs or watch TV while oxygen flows through the mask.

The Cowboys should ship a few chambers up the road to The Ballpark in Arlington, where the ritziest Rangers fans are holding their breath. Residue from hot dogs, beer and other concessions gets washed into the storm drains under the lower level stands, where it pickles and rots in the heat. That would never happen to Mariners fans.

Best bet on the tube Rocky I: The Braves open what could be their last series of the season, against the Rockies at Mile High Stadium. 6 p.m., TBS (cable 21 in Spokane).

The last word … “My father was an undertaker. There were advantages. For instance, while I dated my wife, I sent her flowers every day.” Digger Phelps, former Notre Dame basketball coach
