Letters To The Editor

Hammock missed, too

Something has definitely changed about living in the Spokane Valley.

After reading Margo Patterson’s letter in the Valley Voice (Aug. 4), I felt compelled to write this letter.

On July 24, my hammock was stolen from our yard. I had had it only three weeks and even bought padlocks to ensure it stayed put. But the locks didn’t fit and my husband assured me no one would enter our property to steal it.

Like Margo, I was sick. I cried and felt terrible.

You see, this was my birthday and Mother’s Day gift. I rocked my baby to sleep in it at night when he was too hot to sleep indoors. I laid in it with my 4-year-old boys and sang songs and traded thoughts. It was a place for us to take time out and relax when everything got too busy.

I even called pawn shops to see if any had been brought in. Most owners laughed or chuckled, “Hammocks??”

I just want this one back.

So neighbors, if you’ve seen someone with a new hammock strung up in their yard, I’d love to know because this one is marked. I’d know it in a second.

Every time I put something new out in our yard or garden, I feel like it has to be locked or cemented in the ground. We’re adding security lights and even thinking of a video surrveilence system outdoors. Gads!

I’ve lived here 27 years and until 1988 never owned a house key. Our family house on Bowdish was never touched and nothing was ever taken.

Now everything is victim to someone else’s fingers. How sad.

And, Margo, while I’m looking for my hammock, I will certainly be looking for your duck. Jody Wakem Opportunity
