Students, Instructors Honored For Accomplishments
The following people have been honored for their academic achievements:
Academic honors
These local students have been recognized for outstanding academic achievement at their respective schools:
William Rafferty, son of William and Catherine Rafferty, Spokane; dean’s list at Colby College, Waterville, Maine.
Gregory Beatty, son of Brian and Barbara Beatty, Spokane; dean’s list at University of Notre Dame, Ind. He is a 1992 graduate of Mead High School.
Katherine Anselmo, daughter of Patricia Anselmo, Spokane; president’s list at Seattle University, earning a 4.0 for spring quarter. She is a 1993 graduate of Mead High School.
Joseph Horwath, son of William and Sheryl Horwath, Chattaroy; dean’s list at the College of Engineering at Villanova University, Pa. He is a 1993 graduate of Gonzaga Prep School.
Kelcey Milbrandt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Milbrandt, Colbert; dean’s honor roll at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.
Gretchen Laete, daughter of Jacob and Janelle Laete, Spokane, has been named Presidential Scholar, the college’s highest academic honor, at Wisconsin Lutheran, Milwaukee.
Scholarships
United Security Bank awarded four scholarships in the amount of $1,250 to high school graduates in the area:
Kristen Davis, Curlew High School, plans to attend Whitworth College and study elementary education with an emphasis on the hearing impaired. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA.
Darin Kamstra, Colville High School, plans to attend Eastern Washington University and study music composition and performance.
Rachel Rathbun, Colville High School, plans to attend ITT Technical Institute to complete the Computer Aided Drafting course. Her GPA was 3.87.
Kristen Merle, valedictorian from Kettle Falls High School with a GPA of 4.0. She plans to attend Pacific Lutheran University, Parkland, Wash.,to study education with emphasis on mathematics and special education.
Graduates
The following local residents were graduated this spring from their respective schools:
Stacey Berry Anderson, cum laude, from the University of Idaho. She is a 1989 graduate of University High School and the daughter of Bill and Marie Berry.
Todd Glass, Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College, Portland. He also was awarded membership in the Cornelius Honor Society.
Alison Trenter, Yuba College, Marysville, Calif., received the prestigious Yuba College Medal for academic excellence. She is a graduate of University High School and the daughter of Wayne Schulte, Spokane.
Susanne Treloar, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Ind., is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Treloar, Spokane.
Nanette Palmer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., is the daughter of Bonnie Miller, Spokane, and Sandy Palmer, Yakima.
Mary Ellen Holland, with distinction from the School of Bank Marketing, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. She is Project Coordinator of Sterling Savings.
NIC awards
North Idaho College presented the following Employee Awards:
Beverly Hatrock, nursing instructor, received the North Idaho College Foundation Faculty Achievement Award.
Joyce Ferrell, secretary for Division of Nursing, received the Employee of the Year for North Idaho College Support Services Organization.
Connie Dawson, associate director of Financial Aid, received the Employee of the Year for Professional and Supervisory Staff.
Nursing center promotions
Three faculty of Spokane’s Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education recently received promotions:
Anne Mealey, who has specialized in psychiatric-mental health nursing education at the ICNE since 1973, became full professor. Her current research about depression is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
Charlene Clark, director of the center’s Learning Resources Unit and 25-year teacher of audio-visual media in nursing education and administration, became full professor. She consults about multi-media learning technologies with various health care agencies.
Carolyn Adams, with the ICNE for six years, was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor. Her research focuses on involving patients more in their own health care management. She was recently recognized by the Inland Empire Nurses Association with the first Excellence in Nursing Research award.
Both Mealey and Adams have been appointed to oneyear terms on advisory committees of the Washington Health Services Commission.
