Indian Youths, Elders Resolve Day-Long Standoff

Associated Press

A standoff between an Indian youth group and tribal elders ended peacefully Wednesday, two days after the youngsters holed up in an administration building and barricaded its entrances.

Tribal Gov. Cliv Dore called police to the building on the Pleasant Point reservation Wednesday morning, and the standoff was over by 3:30 p.m.

About 25 to 30 youngsters took over the building on Monday, after a meeting with Dore failed to resolve a dispute over a $900,000 construction loan. Phone service to the office building was cut off during the takeover, police said. The standoff was peaceful.

The young people had threatened to occupy the administration building until they were satisfied the loan repayment was settled.

Police did not say how the conflict was resolved.
