Police Still Seek Cda Gunman

From Staff And Wire Reports

Police are still looking for a convicted felon who shot a man in the chest early Tuesday morning.

Martin Nunez, 32, remained hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday after a bullet ripped through his chest, coming out the other side and piercing his arm.

Police believe Urbano Brito Herrera is responsible for the shooting. An arrest warrant has been issued for the 37-year-old Coeur d’Alene man on a charge of attempted murder.

Coeur d’Alene Police Capt. Carl Bergh said investigators have not yet been able to locate Herrera, who was convicted of delivering cocaine in 1988.

Police believe Nunez and Herrera got into a fight at Beta’s Place tavern Tuesday morning shortly before the shooting.

Nunez was shot at about 1:25 a.m. in an alley near 18th and Lakeside.

He remained in the intensive care unit at Kootenai Medical Center Wednesday.

“He’s pretty scared,” Nunez’ brother, Valentino Nunez, said Wednesday. “He’s got tubes in him, that is frightening him.”

Valentino Nunez said his brother is conscious but cannot speak because he is on a respirator.

He said he did not know whether his brother knew Herrera and said Martin Nunez is not yet able to tell the family exactly what happened.

“I want this guy caught in a big way,” Valentino Nunez said.

The bullet pierced Martin Nunez’ colon, pancreas and the lower part of his liver, Valentino Nunez said.

He said his brother does not have health insurance to pay for the mounting hospital bills. For anyone wishing to make donations, the family has started a fund at U.S. Bank, Account No. 2920226004.
