Santa Anita Field Set

Compiled From Wire Services

Eight horses were entered for the $700,000 Santa Anita Derby, richest of all the Kentucky Derby preps.

Saturday’s field will include two colts unbeaten as 3-year-olds, Afternoon Deelites and Larry The Legend, along with 2-year-old champion Timber Country, and Louisiana Derby winner Petionville.

While the field is one of the strongest in years, the Santa Anita Derby is considered in some circles a test of mettle between Afternoon Deelites and Timber Country.

The entire field in post position order, with jockeys and odds: Lake George, Eddie Delahoussaye, 15-1; In Character, Corey Nakatani, 10-1; Afternoon Deelites, Desormeaux, 8-5; Larry The Legend, Gary Stevens, 5-1; Fandarel Dancer, Fernando Valenzuela, 20-1; Jumron, Goncalino Almeida, 15-1; Petionville, Chris Antley, 6-1, and Timber Country, Day, 2-1.
