Raiders Sign Former All-Pro To One-Year Contract In Effort To Bolster Defense

Compiled From Wire Services

The Los Angeles Raiders signed five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Pat Swilling to a one-year contract on Monday.

Swilling’s contract is loaded with incentives. He will receive a base salary in the neighborhood of $500,000 with the opportunity to boost his earnings easily to more than $1 million. He has an outside shot at earning $2 million.

The Raiders hope Swilling, 30, can replace Winston Moss, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks on March 15, at outside linebacker.

Swilling (6-foot-2, 242 pounds) spent the past two seasons with the Detroit Lions, where there were some grumblings that he was on the downside of his career.

The New York Times has joined a growing list of publications reporting that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Joe Montana will announce his retirement early next week in San Francisco.
