WSU Sophomore Athlete Achieves Personal Best

Washington State sophomore Heidi Shultz compiled a personal-best 2,844 points for fifth place after the first day of the heptathlon Thursday held in conjunction with the Mount San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.

UCLA’s Shelia Burrell used victories in the 100 hurdles and 200 meters to lead the field of 15 athletes with 3,214 points. Wendi Simmons of the Nike Coast Track Club was second with 2,966 points, followed by Nevada’s Janel Shandler with 2,877 points and Darlene Malco of UCLA with 2,874 points.

Shultz opened with a clean 100 hurdle race and finished in 15.86 seconds. She cleared 5-1 in the high jump, her heptathlon best, put the shot 36-8 1/2 feet and clocked a personal best time of 25.67 seconds in the 200 meters.

WSU women’s crew

The Washington State women’s crew team hosts a five-team regatta on Saturday at the Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.

The Cougars will be joined by Gonzaga, Western Washington and Puget Sound. The WSU men’s club also will be rowing against the same teams along with a squad from Pacific Lutheran University.

The first race is scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m.
