Local Girl Scouts Receive Gold Award
The following Girl Scouts have earned the Gold Award, the highest honor bestowed by Girl Scouts:
Amanda Beth Olsen, is the daughter of Kenneth and Carol Olsen. She planned and successfully executed an erosion-control project on California Creek in Valleyford Park. Her goals were to rid a section of riverbed of noxious weeds and to replant the area with native plants to prevent or slow erosion. With the help of three Junior and Cadette troops, she planted 200 trees and shrubs in the park on Sept. 10. She is a junior at University High School and is a member of the band and color guard. She is treasurer of Girl Scout Troop No. 208 and has been a Girl Scout for more than 10 years.
Rachael Hawkins and Melissa Hawkins are the daughters of John and Joyce Hawkins. They successfully planned and carried out a project designed to help families in crisis. Their goal was to help comfort the children of families in the Spokane area this past winter. Each girl organized a group of volunteers to make 21 quilts to donate to a charity of their choice. Rachael chose the Ronald McDonald House and Melissa chose the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.
Rachael is a sophomore at University High School and is sophomore class vice president, University Chorale accompanist and girls basketball team manager. She is in Senior Girl Scout Troop 208 and has been involved in Girl Scouts for eight years.
Melissa is a freshman at Horizon Junior High School, is secretary for her youth group at church, the freshman class president and a member of the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus. This year she was on the Greater Spokane League’s champion gymnastic team at U-Hi. She has been in Girl Scouts for seven years.
Erin Buehler, daughter of Debbie Buehler, Spokane, has had her drawing selected to appear on the “Fit For Bloomsday” poster and individual training schedule (for logging miles run and running time). These items are used by students who participate in Bloomsday training at their schools. She is a fifth-grader at Moran Prairie Elementary School. She received a plaque, and her class was treated to an in-school pizza party.
Frank White, art teacher and chair of the Fine Arts Department of Gonzaga Preparatory School, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Spokane Arts Commission.
