Lakeland Collects No-Hitter, 23 Runs In Sweep

Lakeland didn’t score until the fifth inning of the first game but outscored host Bonners Ferry 23-2 thereafter in an Intermountain League baseball doubleheader sweep, 8-3 and 15-0, Saturday that included a no-hitter by Brett Deboer in the second game.

Deboer struck out eight.

At Coeur d’Alene, Todd Hughes went 4 for 4 in the first game and Jason Rook had four hits in the second as the Vikings improved their record to 6-2 with a Inland Empire League sweep of visiting Moscow, 9-4 and 12-5.

The Vikings scored four runs in the first inning of game one and four times in the second inning of game two to rally from early deficits.

Jeff Anstine struck out five and allowed but two earned runs to win the first game. Bruce Coppess had three RBIs in in game two.

Six Moscow errors were the difference in the second game.

Idaho softball

On Friday, Lake City’s Kelly Nelson pitched her second consecutive no-hitter during the Timberwolves 11-0, 14-4 sweep at Lewiston. She improved to 4-0 in league and 6-0 overall.

Coeur d’Alene bounced back from a defeat against Moscow last Monday to beat the Bears 6-2 in an Intermountain League match at home.

The Vikings (1-2, 4-5) dominated the entire game, limiting Moscow to three shots on goal in the first half amd riding the three-goal hat trick by Brett Fink in its turnaround.

Idaho golf

Travis Fulton of Kellogg was medalist with a 74 at the Kellogg Country Club, but the Wildcats finished 10 strokes behind winner Moscow during the Intermountain League match involving six schools. Teammate Mike Van Hoose was third at 80.

Kellogg’s girls won easily with a 24-stroke advantage over Bonners Ferry. Beth Knott was medalist for the winners with 100.

Frontier League baseball

East Valley improved its league leading baseball record to 7-1 and Brock Rogers continued his torrid hitting during an 8-4 and 8-1 sweep of Pullman at home.

Rogers had four hits and RBIs and now has 20 of each in league.

Trailing in game one, the Knights took the lead for good with a threerun third that included Bill Tincup’s two-run double. It gave sophomore Brian LaMarche his third victory without a loss.

Steve Pipkin, who earned his third save in the first game, also improved to 3-0 with three-hit, eight-strikeout performance in the second game.

EV scored four times in the sixth inning to ice the win, including Rogers’ three-run homer. Keith Osso had five hits in the two games.

Defending champion West Valley (5-3) remained two games behind with its 7-1 and 6-4 road sweep in Clarkston.

Tyson Sohns pitched his second straight strong game, scattering four hits and allowing one run in the opener. Andy Imada went the distance in game two.

Justin Tichy led the Eagles in the doubleheader with three hits, including two doubles. WV had four doubles in the second game and broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth.

Frontier League soccer

Unbeaten Cheney had to scramble to get a 2-2 tie at Riverside/Deer Park, but improved its league lead when East Valley blanked West Valley 2-0 at home.

Nick Reynolds headed in Kyle Anderson’s corner kick for the tying goal to salvage Cheney’s (6-0-1) tie. The teams traded goals in the first half with Chris Koesel putting Riverside/Deer Park ahead 2-1 at the 22-minute mark.

The EV-WV game was scoreless until the final 12 minutes when Tory Swenson and Clint Burgess had goals 8 minutes apart.Goalie Robbie Atwood made two diving saves to preserve his fifth shutout of the year.

Bi-County baseball

Almira-Coulee/Hartline’s Cameron Carstenson pitched a no-hitter in game one to improve his record to 4-1 and scored four runs and had a tworun single in the doubleheader.
