Rogers Takes Charge In East Valley Sweep

Home-standing East Valley improved its Frontier-leading baseball record to 7-1 and Brock Rogers continued his torrid hitting Saturday during an 8-4, 8-1 sweep of Pullman.

The Knights maintained a two-game lead over West Valley and Cheney, which also won twice.

EV’s Rogers had four hits and four RBIs and now has 20 of each in league.

Trailing in game one, the Knights took the lead for good with a three-run third that included Bill Tincup’s two-run double. Sophomore Brian LaMarche posted his third victory without a loss.

Steve Pipkin, who earned his third save in the first game, also improved to 3-0 with a three-hit, eight-strikeout performance.

EV scored four times in the sixth inning to ice the win, including Rogers’ three-run homer. Keith Osso had five hits during the twin bill.

Defending champion West Valley (5-3) remained two games behind with its 7-1, 6-4 sweep in Clarkston.

WV has won five of its last six games.

Tyson Sohns pitched his second straight strong game, scattering four hits and allowing one run in the opener.

Justin Tichy led the Eagles in the twin bill with three hits, including two doubles. WV had four doubles in the second game and broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth, when Clarkston committed four errors.

Cheney kept pace with 13-7 and 9-5 wins at Colville. Nine players had two hits or more in the opener, including three each by Colin Fiddes and Bryan Miller as the team built a 9-2 lead.

C.J. Albin hit a two-run homer and a runscoring double.

Fiddes and Miller finished with five hits apiece. Cheney rallied from a 5-2 deficit in game two with a five-run fifth inning.

Softball

West Valley pitcher Darci Sohns came within a batter of a perfect game to complete a 3-1, 10-0 sweep of visiting Clarkston.

Sohns struck out 10 and walked one in the nightcap, after getting an 0-2 count on Clarkston’s No. 9 hitter in the third. She also saved the first game.

Carrie Koker, who pitched the opener, was 4 for 4, and Annie Schell and Peggy Palmer were both 3 for 4 in the nightcap. Schell also had a run-scoring triple in game one to give the Eagles (3-0) a 3-0 lead in the sixth.

Cheney (2-1) moved up in the standings with a 5-4 and 11-1 sweep of Colville (1-2).

Joanne Buxton had two doubles, scoring the tying run in the sixth inning and driving in the tying run in the eighth. Stephanie Golden followed with RBI singles both times, the latter winning the game.

Carla Warrington had a two-run single during a four-run first, and the Blackhawks had a four-run, four-hit fifth inning.

Soccer

Unbeaten Cheney had to scramble to get a 2-2 tie at Riverside/Deer Park, but improved its league lead when host East Valley (4-1-1) blanked West Valley (4-2-1) 2-0.

Nick Reynolds headed in Kyle Anderson’s corner kick to salvage Cheney’s (6-0-1) tie. The teams traded goals in the first half of the well-played game, with Chris Koesel putting Riverside/Deer Park ahead 2-1 at the 22-minute mark.

The EV-WV game was scoreless until the final 12 minutes, when East Valley’s Tory Swenson and Clint Burgess had goals 8 minutes apart.

Goalie Robbie Atwood made two diving saves to preserve his fifth shutout of the year.

In the league’s other game, Pullman whipped Colville 7-2. John Evermann had two goals.

Bi-County baseball

Almira-Coulee/Hartline’s Cameron Carstenson pitched a no-hitter in game one to improve his record to 4-1, and scored four runs and had a two-run single during the team’s 12-0, 14-7 sweep of Odessa.
