U-Hi Tightens Up Baseball Standings

One day after Rogers had taken over undisputed first place in Greater Spokane League baseball, University toppled the Pirates 10-2 on Saturday.

The host Titans (5-2) scored all their runs in the first four innings and had 13 hits to make it easy for pitcher John Sims.

He struck out eight and allowed five hits, including home runs by Adrian Olson and Jeff Knight.

Six players had two hits for University, including Dave Stark, who drove in three runs and Aaron Moe, who drove in another.

Others with two hits were Kevin May, Scott Asan, Brandon Svelmoe and Ben Butler.

Sims improved his record to 2-0 for the Titans.

The loss dropped Rogers to 5-2 and enabled Shadle Park (6-2), a 13-3 winner at Gonzaga Prep (4-3), to move a half-game in front of the GSL duo.

Ahead just 2-1, the Highlanders scored 11 runs in the last two innings.

Darin Talotti was 3 for 5 with a double, triple and four RBIs. Brett Corigliano drove in three runs to back Chris Wilson’s two-hit pitching.

Ferris (4-3), beat winless Lewis and Clark 8-7 after trailing 4-2.

The Saxons scored three runs in fourth inning, including Bryan Cosby’s two-run homer, and won it with two sixth-inning runs, using doubles by Brandon Molett and Chad Johnson and a single by Justin McKitrick.

Preston Ashe of LC (0-7) hit a tworun homer in the seventh with no outs, but Johnson earned a save by getting three outs after walking two Tigers.

In a game at Seafirst Stadium between teams tied for seventh place, North Central (3-4) scored in the eighth inning to beat Mead 5-4.

Jeremy Johnson opened the inning on a walk and went to third when pitcher Damian Long of Mead (2-5) threw the ball into right field trying to pick him off.

Travis Hanson followed with a base hit for the game-winner. Hanson also singled in a run during NC’s three-run fourth inning.

Mead had led early, scoring three first-inning runs on five hits. But winning pitcher Nick Pugliese settled down, winding up with seven strikeouts and only one walk while scattering five more hits.

Sam Chimienti had two doubles for the Panthers.

The Bullpups (8-2, both losses in overtime) were without injured scoring leader Chad Zlateff.
