Jockey Wins 3,000th

Compiled From Wire Services

Jacodra’s Devil took the lead for good on the turn for home in winning the $149,800 Santa Anita Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Arcadia, Calif., by three lengths over Low Key Affair.

Earlier in the day, Kent Desormeaux, 25, became the youngest jockey to reach 3,000 career wins when he rode Maisonsaire to a 1 3/4-length victory in the second race. Desormeaux rode two more winners later on the nine-race card.

Three jockeys - all-time leading winner Bill Shoemaker, Sandy Hawley and Chris McCarron - had been the youngest to reach the 3,000-win milestone - all at age 27.

Larry the Legend, an undersized colt purchased for $2,500 at a bankruptcy sale before becoming a top Kentucky Derby contender with an upset victory in the $700,000 Santa Anita Derby, will miss next month’s Run for the Roses because of a chipped bone in his left leg.
