No one was injured in a fire Saturday morning at a 10-unit apartment building near Pacific and Division, even though the building had no working smoke detectors, according to the Spokane Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to the two-story brick building at 31 W. Pacific at 8:19 a.m. Saturday. Heavy smoke was coming out the front door, said Joe Stapleton, battalion chief.

The fire was confined to a mattress in the bedroom of a firstfloor apartment, Stapleton said.

The resident wasn’t home, but the fire was caused by a cigarette, Stapleton said.
